Café / Bar / Restaurant / Venue - 106 Cuba Mall
Down the end of a long corridor off Cuba Street, Matterhorn grew from
the notion of an extended living room. The long-standing relationship
between the clients and the architect has refined a Wellington
institution; internationally acclaimed for its style, atmosphere,
extensive wine list, outstanding food and service.
Originally established as tearooms in 1963 by two Swiss brothers, the
space has transformed many times, expressing the varying flavours from
each generation. In 1996 the tearooms were reborn and re-fitted as a
boutique cocktail bar. In 2002 it underwent a major re-design, evolving
into the Matterhorn we know today.
As a music venue, the space has been a stepping-stone for acclaimed NZ
musicians Fat Freddies Drop, who recorded their fist album live on
location. Harbouring a strong connection to NZ bands, and continuing to
provide regular community events, Matterhorn’s design has not only
designed a unique operation, but has designed the culture which
inhabits it.
